Jesus
Jesus was commissioned by Wesley Church in Perth Western Australia for The Stations of The Cross exhibition, Easter, 2010.
As research for this work Stewart visited the Spanish Monastery in New Norcia, Western Australia.
Reflecting on the role the spirituality had played in her life, and how her belief in a higher power has guided her through life Stewart noted that she “was reminded me of the fragility of life, how precious every life is”. In the Stations of the Cross, when Jesus falls for the third time, it is acknowledge that immortality is a heavy burden, and that one can easily stumble, or fall under its weight.
Jesus, is Stewart’s interpretation of the ninth station. Suspended in the naïve of the church the sculpture was placed above the alter, as if falling from the sky - A reminded that when we fall, we look up, we look to a higher power.
By suspending the work Stewart hopes to remind the viewer to look up, to look to a higher power, to know that when we fall we can bounce back, that through a higher power no burden is too great to bear.
